On Saturday, 3rd September 2011 a group of Bodyweight training enthusiasts, intermediaries and novices gathered together at The Compound at the William Knibb Youth Centre in the market town of Kettering, located in the East Midlands of the UK for a day of bar based exercise tutorials, music, food and socialising.
The event sponsored by an exciting new sports equipment retailer called Fitstream was the brainchild of young Anton Guidera a 23 year old youth worker, social entrepreneur and creator of The Compound.
The stars of the show and bodyweight tutors for the day were two hardworking late 30-something Dads, Jay Killin Gravity and Lee Wade Turner. The talented two are currently the only UK Bar-barians and part of the first wave outside of the US to be members of the exclusive Bar-barian brotherhood. Jay and Lee started the day off by breaking down the elusive muscle up.
Further tutorials followed in ring dips, ring muscle ups, levers and back levers. On hand also imparting their expert two pence were regulars of Primrose Hill Workout Park and elite bar-athletes in their own right Lemar AKA Lemz, Jeff Agudelo and Chris Sulzdorf. Joining them was Tim Coates an equally talented bar-athlete from Leicester, UK.
After the expert tutorials the crowd was treated to outstanding displays of strength in the form of muscle up variations, one arm pull ups, typewriter pull-ups, handstands, handstand push-ups and planches.
Bar class ended with music from gifted local MCs and singers and a pull up competition in which all those reaching over 10 strict form pull ups received one of our fizzYcaL t-shirts.
Attendees were also gifted with the importance of patience, breaking down goals and then working consistently to attain them - brilliant exercise practice but also excellent physical metaphors for navigating life.
All in all the event was a great success and it was heartening to see the free and enthusiastic exchange of knowledge and opinion between youngsters and elders.
Hats off to Anton for having the drive and passion and for investing the time and effort in pulling together the project. We hope it's now the blueprint for many more to come and we look forward to helping support the event's growth.
